Our Mission to End Period Poverty

The Shona Sisterhood Charity Foundation is dedicated to end period poverty in Zimbabwe. We focus on providing reusable menstrual kits and comprehensive menstrual health education to young girls, enabling them to pursue their education without interruption. Our mission is to empower these girls with the knowledge and resources they need to manage their menstrual health confidently and with dignity.

Why We’re Called Shona Sisterhood

Shona Sisterhood exists to support young girls from the Shona communities of Zimbabwe by providing them with reusable menstrual kits — a simple, sustainable solution that enables them to stay in school all year round.

Too many girls miss class — or drop out altogether — simply because they don’t have access to basic menstrual care. We’re changing that.

The name “Shona” reflects the vibrant communities we serve, while “Sisterhood” represents the global network of women and allies standing together in solidarity. It’s about empowerment, dignity, and opportunity — for every girl, everywhere.

The Shona are a group of culturally related ethnic peoples primarily living in Zimbabwe, as well as parts of Mozambique, Zambia, and Botswana. They make up the majority population of Zimbabwe, and their history, language, and traditions are central to the country’s identity.

Together, we’re creating a sisterhood that breaks down barriers and opens up futures — one kit, one girl, one school year at a time.

Our Initiatives and Services

We are committed to creating sustainable change through our targeted programs and services.

Reusable Menstrual Kits

Our foundation raises funds to support the production and distribution of high-quality, reusable menstrual kits for girls in rural Zimbabwe. These kits are designed to last for several years, offering a sustainable and eco-friendly solution to menstrual health management.

Community Engagement

Our community outreach programs involve local leaders and families to foster a supportive environment for girls. We aim to create a community that understands and supports the needs of young women.

Advocacy and Awareness

We actively work to raise awareness about period poverty and advocate for policy changes that support menstrual health education and resources in Zimbabwe. Our advocacy efforts aim to create systemic change that benefits all girls.

Did you know girls are missing out on 3 months of education, simply being a female without access to sanitary products?

The UN explains that while menstruation is a natural biological process, millions of people around the world face challenges in managing their periods due to lack of access to menstrual products, proper sanitation, hygiene facilities, and menstrual health education.

“Consistent education is a powerful driver of female empowerment — and providing it for less than the cost of two cups of coffee is an opportunity we can’t afford to ignore.” Cassandra | Co-Founder of Shona Sisterhood

“Education is a powerful catalyst for change. With even a small contribution, we can help give others the chance to attend school—just like we’ve been fortunate enough to do.” Monica | Co-Founder
